Today’s blog is about new beginnings and I’m going to encourage you to take a positive look at change and see how this perspective can welcome growth and progress in your life.


By nature, humans look for familiarity. Our brains are designed to find the path of least resistance. To our brains, change represents resistance. It’s a break from the normal neurological pathways we use in our usual daily routine and it takes some effort to redirect ourselves when change comes our way.

For some, this change is frightening. It can cause great stress, anxiety, and provoke a heavy load of fear and angst. I’ll admit, change can be disruptive at times and I know I’ve had second thoughts before making a big change in my life, so I understand. However, there is also a brighter side to change. A side that leads to growth and progress.

In business, there is something called opportunity cost. If you Google “Opportunity Cost Definition” you’ll see it is a noun that is defined as “the loss of potential gain from other alternatives when one alternative is chosen.“. Meaning, if I choose Option A instead of Option B, I lose the potential gain I would have acquired from Option B. How does this relate to fear of change?

More often than it should happen, people choose the option that is more familiar rather then trying something new, and the decision is usually based on fear. You’ll hear reasoning (excuses) like, “I don’t want to try this food in case I don’t like it” or “I don’t want to leave my job because what if I don’t like the new one?” This is so common, so typical, so stagnant. Don’t get me wrong, if you’ve got a good job that fits your work/life balance, pays well, has good benefits, and you enjoy what you do, then there isn’t a reason to change. You’ve got a good thing going. I’m talking about the people who are dissatisfied, unhappy, and disgruntled about their current state yet do not try anything new due to fear.

If you’re one of those people who doesn’t try new things because you’re afraid and uncertain of things panning out the way you want, then you’ll never grow. You’ll just stay where you are and repeat every day like you’re Bill Murray in Groundhog’s Day.

What you want to do is embrace the change. Let’s say you’re unhappy with your current job and you somehow come across an opportunity where you would learn new skills, work on a new team, and even get a promotion in the job title. Would you go for it? Would you shy away in fear of the unknown? These are the moments where new beginnings begin. The dawn of a new day is another opportunity for growth and there are people who run towards it, people who standstill, and people who run away from it.
