Facing the Unknown

Today I was faced with something many people see as frightening, fear-provoking, frustrating, irritating, unpleasant…. the list goes on. But when I changed my approach, this scary giant didn't seem so intimidating anymore.

Today I was faced with the unknown. I had tasks to complete that involved areas I didn't have knowledge in. In my early 20's, I would have become easily frustrated, blamed others for not doing their job and being lazy, or better yet, deny any kind of responsibility for the tasks and put more effort into pawning them off to someone else than it would take to complete the tasks.

However, today is a new day and I've learned a little bit since my early adulthood. Now, in my early 30's (33 today), my approach has evolved. Here's what I did:

  • While looking at each task one at a time, I analyzed each one to figure out what results were expected from them.

  • I slowly went through the list and began working on one by one, addressing the problems at hand and finding solutions.

  • For the tasks I could not move forward with, I saved my work and moved on to the next task. Again, focusing on one task at a time.

By taking my time, focusing on one task at a time, and considering what it would take to tackle the task, I chipped away at each once, resolving 3 out of 7, and I'm just waiting on feedback from colleagues so I can move forward and complete the other 4.

 By applying this approach, I refrain from reacting like a Neanderthal (my wife would argue that statement.. jk hunnie!), and I completed all that I could at this point.

Now, it's time for my lunchtime jog and I'll probably have colleague feedback when I get back to my desk so I can finish the rest.

Self Imposed Inhibitions

I've worked on my website the last two days and I encountered an experience during my work.I experienced self doubt, fear, shame, and humiliation, all because I'm trying something new, something I've never done before on my own.

What then followed was amazing. I flipped the coin, I changed my perspective, I listened to the other voice in my head, and I stopped all self imposed inhibitions.

Because I did this, I proudly and happily finalized my work and published the latest version of my website. No fear, no doubts, no pessimism.

I encourage all of you who have a goal, who have a vision, those of you who have a dream, to never give up, and I repeat, NEVER GIVE UP!

Dreams

For some people, dreams are fantasies, for others they are visions of an ideal future. Your dreams are your ideal circumstances and success is being your dreams to reality. As far fetched as this concept may  seem, it's actually quite possible.

 Ask yourself this question, "What do I want?". What's your answer? Have you ever given it any real thought? A lot of us say things like, "I want to be rich!" Or "I want a huge house and a nice car!". For some though, a dream could include a family, a good career, good health, annual vacations, summer time cookouts, and maybe a nice house, even if it's not a 10 bedroom, 10 bathroom, 3 car garage with a pool house for the in-laws.

 You dreams should a reflection of your true self, a manifestation of your personality, quality traits, and unique tastes. What dreams should actual bring you is happiness. So if owning your own island is your dream, but you're very social, isolating yourself on a tropical island might not be paradise after all.

 Give your dreams, hopes, goals, and aspirations some true thought and identify what you want out of your life because the truth is, you only live once, and why live any other way besides happily.
